Rare John Williams Documentary!

This week’s must see YouTube video is a 1980 BBC documentary on John Williams. It contains very rare footage of Williams composing music on his piano and leading the LSO in recording sessions. How cool!

Suggested Reading

There are few things in life I enjoy more than a crisp fall day spent sipping hot tea and reading a great book. With fall upon us, here are some I suggested titles sure to compliment your cup of Earl Grey.

The World Without Us by Alan Weisman – A delightfully engaging read which asks: how would the planet heal itself if humans were to suddenly disappear? Well written – neither too simplistic nor too technical – Weisman explores both evolutionary history and future projections of the state of Earth. Sure to cause lots of discussion, this would be great for a book club.

The Good German by Joseph Kanon – Set in the immediate aftermath of the fall of Berlin and the Allied occupation, this is a first-class murder mystery.

Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss – Good grammar is hilarious!

On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan – A superbly told story from an amazing writer. Short but immensely powerful.

A Season for Everything

A wise man once wrote that there is a season for everything. A time to build up, a time to tear down. So it is.

I’ve maintained a blog (rather poorly, at times) for over three years. I’d been thinking for a while about starting over with a blank slate, when my web hosting service made the decision for me. With no warning, they went out of business leaving me with no record of those three years of writing. Of course, it is my own fault that I did not back up my posts. Nevertheless, I am viewing this as a great opportunity to begin anew. I will begin regular posting here soon.

Thank you for reading.

Yours,
Matthew
