Profane Masterworks

Maybe profane is too harsh, but the music of Peter Schickele is as irreverent as classical music can get. Schickele and his alter-ego PDQ Bach, skewer all forms of classical music with hilarious parody and really, really bad puns. So, tonight I was delighted to hear, on my drive home, Schickele’s 1712 Overture, a send up of the Independence Day mainstay about Napoleon’s defeat in Russia. Where Tchaikovsky quotes La Marseillaise and “God Save the Tsar”, Schickle quotes “Yankee Doodle” and “Pop Goes the Weasel.” Check it out. You can get a feel for Schickele’s antics in this video.
